Gangasagar or Sagar Island is an island in the Ganges delta, lying on the continental shelf of Bay of Bengal about 100 kms (54 nautical miles) south of Kolkata. Gangasagar is a charming tourist destination, which attracts both pilgrims and adventure lovers. Located on an island in the Sundarbans, Gangasagar offers the charms of an un-spoilt beach on the estuary of the river Ganges.

Gangasagar has acres of dazzling silver sand and clear blue sky, Gangasagar is still relatively unknown and thus, unexploited. The island of Gangasagar is among the most popular Hindu pilgrimage places in the country. Each year on Makar Sankranti (mid-January), large number of devotees from all over the nation, congregate at Gangasagar for a sacred dip at the convergence of the river Ganga and the Bay of Bengal. After the sacred dip, the pilgrims offer 'Puja' at the Kapil Muni Temple or Ashram. In several Hindu myths, the name Gangasagar is mentioned, Gangasagar also finds itself in the poetry of Rabindranath Tagore. The lighthouse at Gangasagar has great views of this beach and is perfect for watching the sunrise and sunset.

How To Reach

Gangasagar Yatra especially falls on either 14th or 15th January every year in which the devotees perform their rituals and prayer and take a dip in the holy Ganges.

By Air : The closest airport to the Gangasagar is Kolkata International Airport, located at nearly 129 km of distance. Being one of the Major International airports of India, it is widely connected through the regular flights to all major Indian cities and various countries of the world. You can hire a taxi or catch the bus to reach Gangasagar from the airport.

The Kirnahar railway station, which is located at the 6.4 km of distance from the Gangasagar is the nearest rail station. However, Gangasagar can be reached from few other railway stations which are located nearby such as the Salar Railway Station at a distance of 16.7 km, Chowhatta Narogage Railway Station at a distance of 19.3 km, Katwa Railway station at a distance of 25.1 km and Ahmad Pur Railway Station at a distance of 25.4 km from Gangasagar. One can hire a taxi or catch a bus to Gangasagar from the railway station.Gangasagar is located around 135 km from the Kolkata, capital of West Bengal. It would take around 5 hours to reach Gangasagar from Kolkata by road.

Distance between Kolkata to Ganga sagar is 100 km. Though trains are available and there are good roads till Kakdeep, the best way to go to Ganga Sagar, is by taking a bus till Harwood Point, which is 80km from Kolkata. Normally the bus fare is only Rs. 40 till Harwood Point.
