Gangasagar Mela

Ganga Sagar Mela, also known as Ganga Sagar Yatra or Ganga Snan, is the annual gathering of Hindu pilgrims to take holy dip in River Ganga before She merges in the Bay of Bengal Sea during Makar Sankranti at Sagar Island or Sagardwip in West Bengal, India.

Ganga Sagar Mela 2019 date is January 14. People also take holy dip on January 13 and January 15.

After the sacred dip, the pilgrims offer 'Puja' at the Kapil Muni Temple or Ashram. In several Hindu myths, the name Gangasagar is mentioned .

Gangasagar Mela is famous world wide and this mela is celebrated with great pomp and grandeur in this state. This mela is regarded as one of the main fairs celebrated in West Bengal. The mela gathers thousands of devotees from different parts of the country. The fair is one of the main attractions in the winter span of West Bengal.

The Gangasagar fair begins a couple of day early and ends on the day after Sankranti.

Thousands of Hindus take holy dip at the auspicious time on Makar Sankranti day and offer prayers to Lord Surya (sun god). The holy dip is believed to wash the sins away and lead to the attainment of Moksha.
Devotees start to arrive in the first week of January and the venue attracts maximum pilgrims on the Makar Sankranti day.
